FREIGHT-2004:
Container transportation in Russia

 

June 3-4, 2004, SeaNews Information & Consulting held the "FREIGHT-2004: Container Transportation in Russia" conference supported by the RF Federal Merchant Marine and Inland Shipping Agency and the RF State Customs Committee. The general sponsor of the event was Nosoroslesexport HSC, while separate sections were sponsored by Sun Microsystems and Solvo Ltd. Vyacheslav V. Ruksha, Head of the RF Federal Merchant Marine and Inland Shipping Agency, stated in his address to the conference delegates that container transportation development has been defined as a top priority by the Russian Transport Development Strategy, therefore attracting container traffic to Russia is a key task. At the conference, industry leaders, including top executives from major Russian and foreign container operators, transportation, logistics and freight forwarding companies, shippers, transport equipment manufacturers, consulting agencies, research institutes, as well as controlling bodies and authorities, discussed ways and means to reach this goal. Over 150 delegates form over 130 companies attended the conference. Representatives of the St. Petersburg City Administration, the North-West Customs Administration, companies operating in the ports of St. Petersburg, Novorossiysk, Hamburg, Rotterdam, Klaipeda, Ilyichevsk, Russian Aluminum JSC, National Container Co Ltd., Russian offices of Maersk Sealand, P&O Nedlloyd and OOCL, Team Lines Finland Oy, TransSiberian Express Service Ltd., Ernst & Young, Kalmar Industries, Fantuzzi Eurasia, Straightway Southeast Finland, Steveco Oy and many others were among the audience. The conference program was split into four sections, those on Terminals, Transportation and Competition, Freight Forwarding and Logistics, and Customs. The delegates discussed container terminal management technology, investing into container terminal development, cargo transportation in special purpose containers, shipping lines development, intermodal transportation infrastructure formation, regional problems of transit and logistics, customs procedures evolution under the new Customs Code, and other issues. Lieutenant-General Anatoly V.Galaktionov, Head of the Chief customs control organization administration of the RF State Customs Committee, Major-General Ivan A. Krasulenko, Head of the Baltic Customs, Rear-Admiral Batergaray S. Zulkarnaev, Deputy director of Rosmorport FSUE, Sergey S. Kozlov, Deputy director container lines of Far Eastern Shipping Co, Sergey S. Shavzlis, Managing director of Euro-Asian International Transport and Logistics Center JSC, Vladimir A. Pogodin, production director of LenMorNIIProekt JSC and other speakers delivered their presentations at the conference. In the framework of the conference, Novoroslesexport JSC held a round table, presenting their project of modernizing the port aimed at increasing the container terminal capacity up to 300 thousand TEUs. The delegates also attended excursions to St. Petersburg's major container terminals - those operated by First Container Terminal JSC, Petrolesport JSC and Rusmarine-Forwarding Ltd. SeaNews Information & Consulting intends to make the conference on container transportation an annual event. Meanwhile, for November 2004, another FREIGHT event, "FREIGHT TECH 2004" dedicated to modern technologies in the freight industry, is scheduled. Organizers:
